Tour de France (August 2009)
Posted by Richard on Friday 27th November 2009 at 01:01 AM

We spent the last two weeks of August on another 2,500 mile road trip around France - from Chartres to the Dordogne, from Gers to Languedoc, and from the Côte d'Azur to the Côte d'Or. Adam and Mark were already with their Grandparents in the south, so Laura and I had a few days to ourselves. :-)

Chartres
Posted by Richard on Friday 27th November 2009 at 01:07 AM

Our first stop was Chartres, for a day wandering around this beautiful old town with its iconic cathedral, fine dining by the river, and a night in Hotel Le Chatelet. All very nice. We had breakfast in the shadow of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres, but they'd run out of croissants! Click here to view this Page

Maumont

From Chartres we headed for the Dordogne to gatecrash Trevor and Fang's honeymoon. This was our first time back at Mr & Mrs W's cottage in Maumont since the disturbing 'Three Billy Goats Gruff affair' of 1994! This time round the 'fête de la noix' at Naihlac was an unexpected highlight. Click here to view this Page

Donzenac

Our night in Donzenac - staying at Hôtel La Gamade and eating our evening meal at Le Périgord - was a trip down memory lane. We first came here on our first holiday together in 1986. Not much had changed! Click here to view this Page

Castex

We were joyfully reunited with our children (!) at their grandparents' in the Gers - Adam had been there for three weeks, following the Camping le Ch'ti debacle; Mark for a week, since leaving his cousins in Biot. Click here to view this Page

Route des Bastides
Posted by Richard on Wednesday 2nd December 2009 at 12:36 AM

Once Adam had departed - we'd meet up again at Liz's in Biot - the rest of us could all fit in one car. We had a really nice day with Evelyne and Gerald, following the Route des Bastides. Lunch in Bassoues was excellent ... and very reasonable! Click here to view this Page

Notre Dame du Cros
Posted by Richard on Friday 27th November 2009 at 01:12 AM

Another cross-country route took us from the Gers to the Aude, for a night with Emma, Doug, family and friends near Caunes-Minervois. OK, so another couple of Geocaching detours en route, but what else would have taken us from the summer fête in Simorre (not too far from Gerald and Evelyne's) into the gorge above Notre Dame du Cros? Click here to view this Page

Biot
Posted by Richard on Friday 27th November 2009 at 01:12 AM

The next leg of our tour took us to Liz's new home in Biot, near Antibes on the Mediterranean Sea - very nice. Sun, sea, sand, swimming pools, what more could you ask for? Click here to view this Page

Antibes
Posted by Richard on Tuesday 1st December 2009 at 11:56 PM

Antibes is only a few minutes drive from Biot. We enjoyed our only dip in the Med off the Cap d'Antibes, as well as taking in the sites of the old town. Very relaxed. Click here to view this Page

Into the Mountains
Posted by Richard on Wednesday 2nd December 2009 at 12:22 AM

Not only is Liz a few minutes from the Med, but head in the other direction and you're soon starting to climb the mountains of the Alpes Maritimes. Paul led us on a great tour of mountain passes and hill-top villages; we took our well-deserved pitt stop at Bouyon. Click here to view this Page

Nice and Monaco
Posted by Richard on Tuesday 1st December 2009 at 09:47 PM

On my birthday (39 and holding), we cruised along the French Riviera from Antibes through Nice to Monaco. Some splendid sea views and a fleeting glimpse of how 'the other half' live! Click here to view this Page

In the Pool

Needless to say, the pool within Liz's gated 'residence' was a big hit with the kids. Click here to view this Page
