Our second full day took us three blocks down 34th Street to the Empire State Building. I wish we'd taken the advice from the Rough Guide and skipped the 'New York SKYRIDE', but the 320m ride to the 86th floor observatory is definitely worth the bucks! (You can get even higher, up to the 102nd floor, but I think you may need oxygen for this).
Completed in 1931, the Empire State Building (381m) was the tallest building in the world; it's still in the top 10, and following the World Trade Center attacks in 2001, it's back at the top of the list for New York.
