Tour de France (August 2002)
Posted by Richard on Saturday 5th October 2002 at 11:02 PM

Our Grand Tour of France this summer started with a slight detour into Switzerland. From there we headed down to Miélan in the South of France, back up to Les Sables d'Olonne in the Southern Vendee, and home via le Mont-St-Michel. We even managed a border crossing into Spain.

With no CD player in the car, Laura and I dug out our vintage tapes to stage a 1980s revival on the long journeys. However, Martin Shaw reading The Hobbit proved a better bet for pacifying restless kids in the back!

Détour en Suisse
Posted by Richard on Saturday 5th October 2002 at 11:02 PM

The first leg of our tour took us across northern France and into Switzerland. We stayed with Tim and Gill in La Tour-de-Pielz, between Vevey and Montreux, on the beautiful Lac Leman - or Lake Geneva to us Brits! We particularly enjoyed sampling the wines at the market in Vevey and taking to the water in our pedalos. Click here to view this Page

Retour à Miélan

The second leg of our journey took us from Switzerland back to Gasconny in the South of France. From our base at Laura's parents in Miélan, we drove onto Spain (for a day) and also revisited Les Grottes de BetharramClick here to view this Page

Les Sables d'Olonne et la Côte Sauvage
Posted by Richard on Saturday 5th October 2002 at 11:02 PM

From Miélan, we headed for Les Sables d'Olonne in the Vendee (down from Britanny; up from Bordeaux). The beach was a stone's throw from our campsite at La Dune des Sables, but this length of coast, along the La Chaum peninsular, is known as 'la côte sauvage' (the wild coast) - the body boarding was certainly harder work than last year! Click here to view this Page

Le Mont-St-Michel

As in 2001, our route home took us the past le Mont-St-Michel, and another chance for the kids to eat my oysters! Click here to view this Page
