Day 6: 15.5 miles. Our last day: out of Heddon down to the Tyne, and follow the river through Newcastle to Wallsend. With the exception of the fort, all traces of the wall have gone from this stretch, but a nice day's walk to finish.
Great views of all the bridges over the Tyne as we came into Newcastle, and a good lunch at The Slug and Lettuce on the Quayside. We were led to believe that the walk out to Wallsend would be 'grim', but we were pleasantly surprised. We particularly liked St. Peter's Harbour, and some of the regeneration along the riverside looks great.
And finally ... Segedunum Fort at Wallsend! Passports stamped for the last time. Achievement certificates and badges purchased, and a last cup of tea in the museum cafe.
We took the metro back into the city centre and having stocked up on medical supplies from Boots, staggered our last few steps over the Swing Bridge to the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on the other side of the river.
After a sauna and a swim, we took a taxi back into the city centre for celebratory champagne cocktails followed by tapas at La Tasca. Very nice.
