Day 3: 16.8 miles. As well as being one of the longest day's walks, consensus was that this was the best. At last, our first encounters with the wall, its turrets, milecastles and forts. The terrain was more challenging too, as we followed the crags of the Great Whin Sill. The scenery was spectacular, and we reached the highest point on the path at Winshields Crag at the end of the day.
Birdoswald - not to be confused with Birdworld (near Farnham) - was well worth the time-out. A good dose of history from the museum, and a real sense of scale from the ruins of the fort.
From Steel Rigg, we dropped off of the path, down to Once Brewed and the The Twice Brewed Inn. We'd heard mixed reviews for the Twice Brewed, but we found the accommodation perfectly acceptable; the ales and food were excellent, and there was a great feeling of camaraderie in the bar.
