Day 1: 15.1 miles. Our first full day took us from Port Carlisle to the city of Carlisle. A gentle start, through the salt marshes and mudflats of the Solway Firth, and then alongside the River Eden into Carlisle. Not much sign of the wall here, unless you look closely at the stonework of the local churches!
We made good time, and headed into the city centre in search of coffee, before taking the final steps to the Courtfield Guest House. Accommodation was fine, but it seems our packed lunches were donated to earlier guests!
We headed up the road to the lively Beehive pub for dinner – not exactly fine dining, but certainly no problems with the portions or the enthusiasm of the staff. (Peter, however, still regrets not going for the 'Mega Codfather', which would have added curry sauce to his fish dish).
